Walking home...

Tonight I'm walking from work reflecting on life...2 people who's opinion I really VALUE straightened me out about me using the word "hustle" when referring to tattooing....I never thought of it in a negative way, but I read their point of view and they are RIGHT...tattooing is not a "hustle" it's a lifestyle (which I live) and being "rich" will not get you respect from your fellow tattoo artists....different cultures and backgrounds see life, art, and business differently but I value everyones opinion and I never wanted to rub anyone the wrong way with my last post... And if I did I'm man enough to say i'm sorry for letting the general public know too much about the business and lifestyle of tattoo artists....I was just speaking to my friends and wasn't thinking about how many non-tattooers read my blog...I'm almost home now so it's time to roll one up... Drink some wine and look at a movie... Hmmmm maybe "Ray" or "Mo' Betta Blues" peace yall....

I think you displayed a boldness this industry needs and provided a "push" first and foremost for the majority of African american artist in this business. "Hustle" can be applied in a positive way simply because tattoos aren't a need. you don't have to hustle to sell a burger..simply because people need to eat..they might not want to eat at that particular establishment but all in all they "need" to eat. don't let YOUR definition of "hustle" be misconstrued...to some people "hustle" is to obtain something by deceitful or illicit means; practice theft or swindling, and by all means you wasnt expressing that at all. i have more real talk for you but i dont want to offend people. you did good bro, never regret!

Miya, I totally undertood your point in the original post "walk-in winter?", and it even spoke to me in a way that made me look at myself. I definitely didnt want you to think that the post wasn't very helpful. Thank you so much, and I always look forward to your blogs for inspiration. Thank you and much love and respect.

i read both posts. and i can see both points of view. but the bottom line is we as artists need to get out there and claim what's ours, regardless of how we refer to that process.

i avoid use of the word "hustle" simply because i don't want people to think what i'm doing is temporary or a quick come-up. but that's me.

but what can't be refuted is your drive, your determination, and your follow-through ('cause drive and determination mean nothing without the follow-through). you're an inspiration, and you've taught me a lot about business through your ACTIONS. keep on keepin' on, love.
